Being Green – Made Easy
Our environment is something that’s very important to me. We’re nearing a point of no return. We either step up and do something or we do nothing and die with everything else. Granted, none of us really know for sure what we can do. Scientists keep changing their minds about what actually works and they’re always arguing about whether it’s global warming or climate change. Who cares what it’s called, the fact is something is happening.
I think the key is moderation. We don’t have to over complicate things. If everybody on the planet were to do something simple everyday, like unplugging their cell phone charger when they’re not using it, the impact would be amazing.
So here are just a few simple things that everybody can do:
Use canvas shopping bags instead of plastic or paper. Plastic takes 1000 years to decompose and 14 million trees are killed every year for those paper bags.
Read ebooks instead of tree books – same reason as the paper bags. Got to save the trees people.
Don’t use paper napkins – use the cloth ones instead.
Use energy efficient light bulbs.
If you’re not in a room, switch off the light.
Don’t run the dishwasher until it’s completely full.
Use the same mug over and over.
Unplug your cell phone charger when you’re not using it.
Don’t fill the kettle up every time you boil it. Only use the amount of water that you need.
If you think of any easy tips I haven’ got here, please let me know and I’ll add them. Hopefully you’ll find these helpful.

Good tips; I’m trying to get into using canvas bags more. I usually forget them!
Another tip: when you print out a proof, reuse the back side of paper. That’s a lot of pages to re-use!
It’s so funny I’m the only person in my office who turns off the lights when they leave.
Hi Chris.
Thanks, that is a good tip. I’m glad you’re trying to use canvas bags more. I have to keep a few in the car otherwise I also forget them.

We recently went back to using canvas bags for shopping. It is a little inconvenient but well worth it.
How about giving up bottled water? Buy a sports bottle and reuse it. Fill it yourself. I doubt that the thin plastics used for bottled water are very good for our health over time.
Turn your thermostat way down at night. It is healthier to sleep in a cool room. You will probably wake feeling better too.

I like your ideas. We live on a sailboat and have for the past 6 years. We are very consious of all this and in many ways are forced to be green. We live off solar and wind power most of the time. We are planning on switching to an RV later this year and have already agreed we want solar power. (Don’t think a wind generator would work)
Those are awesome trips. I’m terrible about remembering canvas bags too. I’ll have to put some in the car. That’s a great idea.
Another thing you can do also is put your stereo and TV on a surge protector, then turn off the surge protector when you’re not using them. This serves a double purpose too, if you have thunderstorms that might damage your electronics.
Keep a container in the kitchen for compost – things like egg shells, banana peels, etc.

Thanks guys! Those are all brilliant tips.
Joy, I am so jealous. I wish I could live on a sailing boat …..mmm…dreaming….
I don’t drink bottled water. We have a filter attached to the kitchen tap and keep a jug of water in the fridge.
